Mayor unveils bustThe general body elections of Sadharan Brahmo Samaj, one of the oldest democratic institutions in India, were thrown into a tizzy on 08-Jan-2009 after two of the contestants found the lock of the ballot box open. Members went to the Samaj office to cast thier votes and found the ballot box open.

Mayor unveils bustThe newly refurbished mausoleum of Raja Rammohun Roy was unvelied by the Indian High Commissioner Mr. Sib Sankar Mukherjee on 28th January 2008. The programme was also graced by the Lord Mayor of Bristol, Chris David. A piece of history was restored when the tomb of Raja Rammohun Roy was resurrected here on the occasion of his 175th death anniversary. More than 150 people attended the ceremony - which was pan - religious in keeping with Rammohun Roy's liberal beliefs.

A seminar which followed, reminded the audience of Rammohun Roy's great contributions in the emancipation of women in India.

Mayor unveils bustIn a significant judgment, the Supreme Court has ruled that State Government cannot interfere in the appointment of teachers in private educational institutions even if it is getting grants from the state. The court ruled that though the State Government could fix minimum educational qualification for a teacher, it cannot restrict society’s right to choose fromthose who possess the eligibility criteria.

Mayor unveils bustA 16-year campaign to save a neglected cemetery in Bristol has finally been won. On 7th August 2003, Bristol City Council has at long last taken possession of the 45-acre Arnos Vale Cemetery from the Bristol General Cemetery Company, which was run by businessman Tony Towner.
